Parenting the positive way!

Above all, it’s important to be consistent with your parenting. You have to set rules and boundaries, and stick to them. If you are indecisive or move those boundaries, your child is likely to get confused and what you say to them in the future will diminish in value. This is where parents can sometimes loose the respect of their children. Be firm but fair, and he we go again…consistent!

When setting rules for your children, try to also adhere to them yourself. Remember how the saying goes - “What’s good for the goose is good for the gander!” So, If your child observes you behaving properly and following the rules, they’re far more likely to do so themselves. This will promote good behavior in your children, and who knows, maybe even yourself.

It’s natural for children to try and bend the rules and then can be very manipulative and crafty when try to doing so. Be aware of this and handle these situations fairly and consistently (there it is again). Remember, if you let them get away with something they aren’t supposed to do just once, you are setting a precedent for them to do it again and again, essentially encouraging bad behavior.

Often, kids will pray on your times of weakness, especially when you’re tired. They often think that during these times they’ll be able to get their own way, because they think you’re too tired and will just let things go. In this situation stay calm, stick to the rules you’ve set, and remain steadfast in your decision-making. If you waver here, they will have won and will continue to use this tactic, since it worked for them in the past.

With parenting, If the rules aren’t working, remember that you are able change them. The key thing though, is to only change them on your terms, if you believe that for whatever reason the old rules weren’t working, or no longer apply. As child grows-up rules will have to be modified. The key is to discuss with your child why you are changing the rules and then after the rules have been changed be consistent in applying them.
